Management research firm Wainhouse Research lists virtual whiteboards, instant messaging, audio and videoconferencing and presentation sharing as the most common virtual office applications. When used correctly these applications allow colleagues to communicate nationally or globally with the same effect as actually being in the office. The problem occurs when these tools don't operate as they should. When a whiteboard freezes, a meeting attendee will have no idea what the speaker is referring to. A chat session that continually disconnects may cause poor communication with a remote worker. Meeting attendees have tried to log on to virtual meetings only to find that the remote log-in is not active and they have missed a crucial business meeting. Businesses have to be diligent in ensuring that the technology remote workers use is functional and is a priority to their IT department.

Hey whats the difference between a virtual office and real office? Does that mean I own the virtual office too? Is there space allocated?

I never knew about all of these different types of software and tools. I am going to have to do some more research. This is some information that I am going to share with some of the agents in the office.

Great article Matt,

Another really cheap service that is taking a lot of the hassle out of the virtual office is Web-based document storage and management. I know that electronic document storage can be confusing and dangerous for small businesses. It can be a huge headache to find things when you have to retain as many records as Real Estates agencies do. It can also be costly and time-consuming to securely share documents.

I wanted to tell you about a new service that just launched last week. It is called DocLanding, www.doclanding.com, and it is a social document storage and collaboration tool. It has some great, one-of-a-kind security and sharing features. It is also offering free accounts for up to 256MB and 1 GB is only $9. Check it out if you are interested. It is completely Web-based and requires no downloads and takes up none of your computer
