“Thank you for serving.”
This one’s a bit off-topic from the stuff about learning, social media and the business of real estate that I, as only one of many contributors to this blog, typically write about. But, I hope you’ll agree, it’s a worthy digression.
Veterans Day as it’s known here in the U.S., or in other parts of the world: Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, is a day to remember and honor our fallen troops (Pat Ardaiz, we still miss you, bro), and to honor those who have served or who currently serve in defense of their country–whether for the U.S. or otherwise.
Why November 11th?
The day coincides with the time when hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect: the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month in the year 1918. (Of note: The Treaty of Versaille, which officially ended the war, wasn’t actually signed until the following year, June 28, 1919.) It marked the end of hostilities of “the war to end all wars.”
”Thank you for serving.”
While sadly, we know “the end of all wars” didn’t turn out to be the case, wouldn’t you agree that, apart from the conflicts between nations, those who serve in defense of our privelege to sleep undisturbed at night deserve at least a simple “thank you” on this day.
Today, and perhaps on other days throughout the year, I’d like to encourage you to go out of your way–walk across the street if you must–to buy lunch for, or simply shake hands with a veteran and say “thank you for serving.”
