Real Estate Trend Update: Twitter Traffic Explodes

I received a few emails indicating surprise that I included micro blogging (Twitter) on my Top 10 Events impacting Real Estate in 2008 so I thought I would provide a little more information for those that are not that familiar with the concept of short text-based 140 character posts.

Twitter is again one of those social media phenomena’s. Founded in 2006 Twitter moved into the mainstream in this year. According to HubSpot 1 million people joined Twitter since October, pushing the new 2008 Twitter users to 3.5 million and the grand total to 5 million Twitterers or Tweeple.

(For the loyal MySpace and Facebook fans, yes Facebook is still about 30 times bigger with approx. 140 million users).

Twaffic (Twitter traffic) has risen sharply on Twitter this year. Already at an admirable 1 million unique users per month at the beginning of the year, traffic has risen to almost 4 million unique users per month, affirming Twitter as the #1 micro-blogging tool on the Internet.

Realtors are also in increasing numbers Tweeting (communicating) and Twittworking (networking on Twitter). Various real estate related applications are also starting to emerge.

I will be posting regular Twend Tweets (Real Estate Trend Updates) on Twitter so you are interested you can follow me @Swanepoel

  • its give such a great idea..nice to read
  • Hi we are base Dubai Property portal and we wonder how can we use twitter to be use with our isitor?
    Could you help
  • There is just something so cool about sitting in a restaurant and while waiting on my order, logging into my Twitter account on my Treo 700wx and posting about the snow we just got or some other local information. And then getting home and logging into my website and seeing the post automagically updated in my "News" section on my main page.

A byproduct of my Twitterogging has been followers, which puts extra pressure on my keeping the subject matter fresh and making sure my tinyurls provide interesting information.
  • Yes Derec, it does take some getting use to - but once you do, it cool. Love that it limits you to be brief.

  • There's a very robust real estate community on Twitter already that will only grow.

It also took me a little while to "get it" but this is a cool tool that helps you connect, which is the objective of social networking.

  • I also think Twitter will increase it's presence in 2009.
  • I also predict Twitter to have its best year and most influencial yet in 2009. It has steadily become an important PR and marketing tool for many business sectors. Real estate and other fast moving sectors get the most from platforms such as these with instant feedback on products etc.
  • I just got on Twitter--it's a lot of fun too and is a good way for staying in touch with friends and clients.
  • Some people I talk to find value in Twitter. Others just don't get it. That's pretty much the way of new technology.

But my question is when will Twitter find a way to pay for itself? VC funding is still trickling in, but will Twitter go the way of Pownce, another micro-blogging platform?

    What then?
